How Was There Light Before The Sun?

As a kid, the first stories I learned in my bible classes were of Adam and Eve and the creation of the Earth. Afterwards, I always knew t the creation story, but I never had any questions about it nor gone back to re read them as I’ve gotten older. However, after reading the book of Genesis this past week, I stumbled upon the question- How could there have been light before the sun? Genesis 1:3-5 reads – And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. If morning and evening is the rise and set of the sun, then how did God differentiate the two without the sun, because according to Genesis 1:15-18, it reads – and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. The fact that the sun and the starts were created on day four indicates that there was another source of light on Earth for the first three days. So what was it?

Was God himself the Light?

According to 1 Thessalonians 5:5 we are all children[a] of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. In John 1:5, we are told that “God is Light; there is no darkness in him at all.” According to Dr. Henry Morris, God is light living in light and did not create darkness but did create darkness. Referring to Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness. Now there’s the question of why did God wait until day four to create the sun? I went back to Dr. Morris’s statement and determined that when he created the Earth it was the darkness and when the Spirit of God announced the command of light, there it was. He wanted it to be known that it was him that is cause of light on the Earth and not the Sun.

The Ancient Egyptians used to worship the Sun because they knew that without it that nothing would be possible. They saw it as God and referred to it as Ra.

Or Was there Some other source of energy?

You could look at this in a scientific perspective and say that for Earth to exist and for there to be the separation of evening and morning there had to be some type of atmosphere. So was it possible that the sun and stars were created when he created Earth and they were unveiled on the fourth day?

We don’t know what the exact source of light was but we do know it was not enough to support plant life, which we as humans need to survive.
Personally, I believe that God himself was the light and the sun acts as his obedient light bearer giving everything on Earth life.
